Healthy lungs supply large amounts of oxygen to your blood and allow you to work, play, and live well. You can keep them healthy by staying away from pollutants, not smoking and participating in regular exercises. In addition, having good dietary practices can also help increase the health of your lungs. Certain fruits contain antioxidants and vitamins that are necessary to keep your lungs healthy and disease free. Let’s have a look.

Effect of Fruits on Lungs

People who consume a diet that consists of large amounts of apples and tomatoes are less likely to develop lung problems. The lung benefits may come from the antioxidants in the apple’s peel and in the tomatoes' coloring. When juicing apples or tomatoes, clean them thoroughly and keep the skin on to retain as many nutrients as possible.

Fruit juice that contains dark berries such as raspberries, blackberries or blueberries, may help to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer. Those berries contain antioxidants, which protect cells from free radical damage.

According to research, eating one-and-a-half pieces of fruit per day or a large tablespoon of vegetables everyday can protect against emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Carotenoids are important for healthy mucus membranes in the lung tissue, healing and protection of lung cells. They are also important for a healthy immune system. Vitamin C & bioflavonoids enhance immunity; a deficiency of vitamin C has been associated with suppressed immunity and poor lung health. Quercetin can reduce allergies and histamine release seen in asthma. This is naturally occurring in berries and apples, lemons, grapes, onions, fennel and kale. Vitamins B3, B6 and B12 may reduce the incidence of asthma, improve lung function and symptoms of allergies.
