Tackle Oily Skin – Home Remedies

oily skin

If you are annoyed by the shining appearance of your face that resembles an oil slick, you know how difficult it is to get oily skin under control. Dealing with it is not impossible. First let us see how to identify an oily skin.

[wp_ad_camp_1]

Oily skin is usually shiny and has pores. It is prone to blackheads and acne as the oil-producing glands are overactive and produce more oil. People with oily skin get frequent breakout and have a greasy appearance, but the good news is that oily skin tends to age slower.

Changes in hormone levels, such as those that occur during the teen years and early 20s, can cause skin to become oily and trigger outbreaks of acne. But it’s not just a problem for teenagers and young adults. Many women notice oily skin problems around the time of their menstrual periods, during pregnancy, or at menopause. Some types of birth control pills can also increase skin oiliness.

There is one more to blame – the male hormone androgen that controls oil production in the skin. While it sounds odd, even women’s bodies (the ovaries and the adrenal glands) produce male hormones. Many women notice that their skin feels oilier around their menstrual cycle and during menopause. This is due to the fluctuating levels of androgen.

 Tips for Tackling Oily Skin

  • Avoid using talcum powder on face as it gets accumulated in the pores and causes more breakout.
  • Use water-based cosmetics or look for “oil free” products.
  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day.
  • Soak neem leaves in water for 5 hours, then remove the leaves and have bath in that water to prevent pimples and acne. Neem leaves have powerful antiseptic properties.
  • Use any clay mask once in a fortnight as it absorbs excess oil from the skin. (eg: multani mutti or fuller’s earth).
  • Avoid heavy creams and moisturizers.
  • Avoid oily and greasy food.
  • Wash your face many times a day.
  • Pull your hair back. It is best to keep hair away from the face if you are having issues with your skin. Often oily hair and oily skin go together.
  • Don’t touch. Keep your hands off your face during the day. Hands deliver excess oil and dirt.

Face Packs & Scrubs

There are some home-made face packs that will help you to treat oily skin effectively.

  • Mix a little honey with few drops of fresh lemon juice and egg white and apply to the face.Wash off with cool water after 15 minutes. Egg white helps to tighten the pores.
  • Mix cucumber pulp with lemon juice and apply to the face. Cucumber is a natural toner. It works as an astringent and is used to cleanse the skin.
  • Apple Facial. If you’re willing to do some creative cooking, your effort will be rewarded with this homemade, oil-ridding facial. Mix 1/2 cup mashed apple, 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal, 1 slightly beaten egg white, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice into a smooth paste. Apply to your face for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  • Make a Scrub or Masque. Giving your face a very light scrub can remove excess surface oil. Try this almond honey scrub: Mix a small amount of almond meal (ground almonds) with honey. Then gently massage (don’t scrub) the paste onto your skin with a hot washcloth. Rinse thoroughly. You can also make a scrub from oatmeal mixed with aloe vera. Rub gently onto the skin, leave on for 15 minutes, then wash off thoroughly. If you suffer from acne on your face, however, you should probably skip the scrub, since it can aggravate your already-irritated skin.
  • Red sandalwood paste mixed with rose water can also be used as a pack for oily skin. It is also an excellent home remedy for blackheads.
  • Egg Yolk. A fast fix for removing oil shine requires one of the simplest foods: the egg. An egg yolk mask dries out the skin. Apply the egg yolk with a cotton ball to oily spots. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  • Gram pulse flour (besan) or green gram flour is best for oily skin as it removes excessive oil from the skin. Mixture of besan with rose water makes a good homemade pack.
  • Refresh Skin With Fruit. Citrus fruits and some vegetables not only refresh the skin but also help reduce oils. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water, pat on face, and let dry. Rinse first with warm water followed by cool water for a refreshing treat. You can also try mixing 1/2 teaspoon lime juice with an equal amount of cucumber juice. Apply to skin a few minutes before showering.
  • Mix fuller’s earth powder with a little orange peel powder and rose water and apply it on your face. Wash with warm water after 15 minutes. This natural treatment, if followed once in a week will help to get rid of oily skin. It also helps to cure acne.
  • Milk that has not been boiled is a very good cleanser, especially since it has cream in it. When combined with turmeric, it makes a great face mask for oily skin. Turmeric is antiseptic and will combat the bacteria that cause pimples.
  • Mixture of rose water, sandalwood paste, and fuller’s earth (a form of clay) can be used as a face pack for oily skin. Rose water cleanses and tones the skin. Sandalwood paste has cooling properties and fuller’s earth removes the dirt and excess oil from the skin.
  • Mix equal quantity of oatmeal (powder it finely) and witch hazel and apply to the face. Remain for 20 minutes and wash it off with warm water. This is a natural toning and cleansing mask for oily skin.
  • Curds (low fat) is an excellent cleanser. Apply it on the skin and wash it off after 15 minutes with lukewarm water. This refreshes dull, tired face and is also good for oily skin.
  • Rice flour mixed with rose water makes an excellent scrub for oily skin.
  • Cornstarch. Cornstarch dries up oily patches. Mix 1 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch with enough warm water to make a paste. Rub on your face, let dry, and then shower or rinse off with lukewarm water in the sink. Try this once a day for best results.
