A sore throat is a painful feeling in the throat aggravated by swallowing. Bacteria or virus causes sore throat, medically known as pharyngitis. Most often it will be a symptom of an underlying illness like cold, flu, mumps, tonsillitis, etc. Sore throat is named, depending on the area where the pain is, like: pharyngitis, epiglottitis, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. Sore throats are usually named after the anatomical sites affected.

Common Causes of Sore Throat

Common causes are viral infection, bacterial infection, fungal infection, smoking, shouting, and allergies.

Sore throats are commonly caused by viruses (often the same viruses that cause colds or other upper respiratory illnesses) or bacteria (such as the infection with streptococcal bacteria commonly called strep throat). The yeast Candida can cause sore throat and throat infection in people with suppressed immune systems. While these are the primary reasons for a sore throat, there are others, including acid reflux, dry air, especially at night when you may sleep with your mouth open, mouth breathing, throat abuse (singing, shouting, coughing), polyps or cancer, food allergy, etc.

Sore Throat Symptoms

Symptoms of sore throat can be generalized symptoms that occur throughout the body such as fever, headache, nausea, and malaise. These may be present with either a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms specific to the throat include pain with swallowing for pharyngitis and a hoarse voice when laryngitis is present.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies

These remedies discussed below are based on the principles of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of healing, and are completely natural, non-invasive, and can be prepared at home.

Remedy #1

  1. Take 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
  2. Add ½ teaspoon black pepper powder.
  3. Add ½ teaspoon salt.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Heat the mixture till it turns lukewarm.
  6. Consume once everyday.

Remedy #2

  1. Take 1 glass hot water.
  2. Add ½ teaspoon black pepper powder.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon salt.
  4. Add ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder.
  5. Allow it to rest till it turns lukewarm.
  6. Gargle with this mixture 2 times a day.

Remedy #3

Saltwater gargle. Several studies have found that doctors generally recommend dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of water. If the salty taste is too unpleasant for you, try adding a small amount of honey to sweeten the mixture slightly. (Just remember to spit the water out after gargling, rather than swallowing!)

Remedy #4

A warm cup of herbal tea can offer immediate, soothing relief for a sore throat. Non-herbal teas – whether they’re made with black, green, or white leaves – contain antioxidants that are thought to strengthen immunity and ward off infection. For an extra boost, add a teaspoon of honey. It’ll help the “medicine” go down, and it has antibacterial properties that may help you heal faster.

Remedy #5

Steam it out. One old-fashioned remedy for a cold or sore throat is a steam tent – sitting with your face over a bowl of steaming hot water and your head covered with a towel to keep the steam in. Adding 1 to 2 drops eucalyptus oil can be soothing.

Remedy #6

Honey. Add one to two tablespoons of honey to one cup of hot water and drink it several times a day. You can also add honey to your favorite cup of herbal tea. Before going to bed, have one teaspoon of honey as it will give you soothing relief and help you to enjoy sound sleep. Honey is also easily available and it has antibacterial properties, which can fasten up the healing process.

Remedy #7

Lemon. Take half a piece of lemon and sprinkle salt and pepper over it and slowly lick the lemon. Another option is to gargle with freshly pressed lemon juice diluted with equal amount of warm water. At the same time, you can try hot lemonade with honey to get relief from the pain. To make the lemonade, add the juice of half a lemon and one tablespoon of honey to one cup of warm water and sip it slowly to get instant relief from the pain.

Remedy #8

Garlic. Take a fresh garlic clove, cut it into half and then suck the pieces. Occasionally, crush the garlic piece with your teeth to release the chemical known as allicin that helps kill the bacteria that causes sore throat. Alternatively, you can use garlic oil. Add a few drops of garlic oil to one-fourth cup of water and use it to gargle once daily. Also try to eat garlic in raw and cooked form.

Remedy #9

Cinnamon. Take one small piece of cinnamon stick, one pinch of pepper and boil it in two cups of water for a few minutes. Drain the water and add a teaspoon of honey to it. Now drink this water while it is still warm to get instant relief from sore throat. Follow this remedy once daily, for a week to get complete relief.

Remedy #10

Fenugreek. You can prepare a gargle from fenugreek seeds which is very effective to treat sore throat. You must gargle with this solution three to four times a day. The mucus-dissolving properties present in fenugreek will help to ease sore throat and give you instant relief from pain and inflammation.

Remedy #11

Turmeric. Another easy and great remedy for sore throat is turmeric which has powerful antiseptic properties. Take a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder and add it to one glass of warm drinking water. Mix it properly and then drink it slowly in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy once daily for three to four days.

Remedy #12

Make a paste of 2-3 cloves with 1-2 cloves of garlic. Mix with 1 cup of honey. Have 1 teaspoon 3 times a day.

Remedy #13

Soak 8-10 almonds. Peel and grind with 8-10 pepper corns. Mix in 1 cup of water. Sieve and drink adding either salt or sugar to taste.

Remedy #14

Warm a cup of milk. Add a pinch of turmeric powder and drink before going to bed.

Remedy #15

Apple cider vinegar. Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to half a cup of warm water and drink it slowly. Soon you will get relief from the pain and inflammation. You can also make a gargle solution with apple cider vinegar.

Remedy #16

Chicken soup. Isn’t it great to hear that chicken soup can help soothe a sore throat as well?! The sodium in the broth may actually have anti-inflammatory properties, and it can feel good going down.

So, next time a sore throat hits you, don’t let it ruin your day. The remedies are a click away!
