Sebaceous glands or oil glands found in the dermis layer of the skin, except palms and soles, secrete sebum which mixes with perspiration and protects your skin.

At times, over secretion of sebum produces small inflamed elevations on the skin of the face, neck, and back; they are sebaceous glands which are infected with bacteria.  It swells up and gets filled up with pus and forms pimples. Pimples though not dangerous, make you feel miserable about your looks.

There are numerous over-the-counter products available in the market to treat pimples, but there are side effects too. Why not try some home-made remedies that can get rid of your pimples.

EHC discusses four proven home-made remedies for treatment of pimples.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is an extract from steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant found in Australia.  Tea tree oil possesses high medicinal value, also used in commercial products like shampoos, gels, and creams etc.   Terpinen-4-ol (antifungal and antibacterial) found in tea tree oil can kill the bacteria that cause pimples, has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin pores and disinfect the sebaceous gland to prevent the outbreak of pimples.  It also reduces inflammation and redness.

Dip a cotton ball or cotton bud into a small bowl containing tea tree oil, apply it gently to the affected areas, leave it overnight for the redness and inflammation to recede, wash it off in the morning, and repeat this everyday until your skin is clear off pimples.  Remember to use only pure tea oil and not any commercial products which contain it.

Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a tablespoon of aloe vera gel and mix it thoroughly, apply it on the affected areas, leave it overnight, wash it off in the morning, continue the regimen until your skin is clear off pimples.

Applying ice on the affected areas reduces swelling, redness, and inflammation.  It shrinks the size of the pimples, hence reducing its lifespan.  Applying ice also reduces pain caused by larger pimples.

Wash your face thoroughly with fresh water, wrap the ice cube in a thin cloth, hold the wrapped ice on the affected areas, hold it on for a few seconds or a minute, remove and then wait for a few minutes before reapplying.Remember not to use ice directly on the pimples.

Lemon juice contains citric acid and is also rich in vitamin C.  Citric acid is known to exfoliate the skin and help the faster healing of pimples.

Take some fresh lemon juice in a small bowl, dip your clean fingers or a cotton ball into it, apply it to the pimples and leave it overnight, wash it off in the morning, continue everyday until pimples clear off.

For people with sensitive skin, you can blend lemon juice (got from half lemon) with a tablespoon of egg white, apply it to the affected areas, wait for 25 to 30 minutes and wash with lukewarm water.

If you have an oily skin and also prone to get pimples, steaming would be a better option.  Steaming your skin softens it, helps clogged pores to get rid of bacteria, oils, and dirt, thus getting rid of pimples.

Take some water in a very clean container, boil it, allow it to simmer, and allow the steam to come in contact with the affected areas, adding a few herbs like peppermint leaves, lemongrass, rosebuds, lavender, or lemon peels would be helpful to get rid of pimples.
