Treating Indigestion The Ayurvedic Way

Indigestion is a mild discomfort in the abdomen with a feeling of fullness. It happens to everyone from time to time. Also known as dyspepsia, it is due to a problem in the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach. 

Usually indigestion occurs after eating spicy or fatty foods or overeating. Some symptoms of indigestion are bloating, gas, burning sensation in the abdomen area, and vomiting. These symptoms usually come on soon after eating or drinking, although there can sometimes be a delay between eating a meal and experiencing indigestion.

The quickest relief from indigestion symptoms comes from your kitchen. For instance, drinking a glass of water at the first sign of indigestion can give you much relief. Water helps dilute stomach acids thus giving you relief from bloating and burning. There are also many other common substances that can be used to treat indigestion.

Common kitchen herbs

Supplement more of kitchen herbs like thyme, fennel, coriander, cumin seeds, black pepper, and asafoetida, while preparing daily meals. Chutney prepared with fresh mint and fresh coriander along with green chilli, ginger, and lemon juice is a good digestive. A fresh piece of ginger with a few drops of lemon sprinkled along with a little black salt is a wonderful appetizer and reliever of many gastric maladies. A glassful of buttermilk with a pinch of roasted and pounded cumin and dry coriander can be of great help.

Coriander

Coriander is an effective spice to treat indigestion. Add some roasted coriander seeds to half a glass of buttermilk and drink it twice a day. You can also mix roasted coriander with ground cardamom seeds, cloves and ginger to make a paste.

Herbal tea

Drinking herbal tea after eating a heavy meal can greatly reduce indigestion. Dip your favorite herbal tea bag into a hot cup of water and cover it for five minutes. Drink it while it is still warm. You can try herbal tea containing mint, raspberry and blackberry for instant relief. Peppermint or chamomile tea can also calm your stomach, especially after overeating.

Honey & lemon

A glassful of warm water with a little honey and a few drops of lemon juice added to it is a good digestive when taken on an empty stomach.

Aloe vera

The juice extracted from the herb aloe vera is the answer to most of the digestive problems. The recommended dosage is 10 to 20 ml twice a day. Fresh aloe vera gel straight from the leaf is balancing. Avoid the store bought juice as citric acid is used as a preservative and it is too acidic if you suffer from acid indigestion.

Fennel seeds

Baked fennel seeds are also recommended to help settle the stomach and balance digestion. Eat 1/4 teaspoon of baked fennel seeds 3 times a day between meals.

Ayurvedic medicines

Many medicinal formulations like Hingwashtak churan, Trifla churan, Lasun vatti, Kumariasav, etc., are quite beneficial when taken in supervision of a qualified Ayurveda practitioner.

Apple

Eating food rich in fiber, like an apple, can be helpful at the first sign of indigestion. The peel is high in fiber, so leave the peel on for best results. Fiber helps clear a clogged digestive system and can give you relief from a stomachache within a few minutes.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit peels have vitamins and nutrients that ease heat and irritation in the stomach due to indigestion. It also will help improve the flow of digestive juices, making your digestive system function better. Grate some grapefruit peel and allow it to dry in the sun for a few hours. Swallow half a teaspoon of the dried peel when you have a stomachache.

Cinnamon

This readily available spice can be of great help when suffering from indigestion. Cinnamon helps in the digestion process and can provide instant relief from cramps and bloating. Make a cup of cinnamon tea by adding one-half teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for a few minutes. Drink it while it is still warm for best results.

Lifestyle changes for curing indigestion 

Make your meals light and relatively small. Try to take 4-5 small and healthy meals a day. Make yourself relax while eating. Eat slowly and chew your food well. Drink a lot of water. Do regular exercise. Do work out what foods make the pain worse and avoid them. Avoid alcohol. Avoid stress.

Do not skip your meal. Do not overeat. Do not eat fruits right before or after you have your meal. Do not mix up hot and cold foods. Do not smoke. Do not take aspirin or medicine containing it. Do not lie down right after your eating. Do not eat late at night.
