Jaggery – The Medicinal Sugar

No, it is not a framework to write web apps. It is the unrefined natural sugar used in the preparation of various dishes in many parts of the world. Although jaggery and sugar are formed from the same sources, they are much different in their appearance, properties, and benefits.

Jaggery is prepared from the sap or juice of plants such as sugarcane and date palm. It is used to make candies, toffees, jaggery cakes and many other sweet preparations. It is also used in the preparation of alcoholic beverages. Jaggery is a healthy alternative to white sugar and is commonly known as ‘medicinal sugar’, because of its various health benefits. It is a wholesome, unrefined whole sugar which contains the goodness of minerals and vitamins. It is rich in iron, magnesium, and potassium.

One teaspoon of jaggery contains approximately 4-5 mg calcium, 2-3 mg phosphorus, 8 mg magnesium, 48 mg potassium, 0.5 mg iron. It has very sweet taste and many indian sweets are prepared with jaggery.

Purifies Blood: Jaggery acts as a cleansing agent for our blood and purifies it. You simply have to add it to your diet and have its benefits.

Source of Minerals: Unlike sugar, jaggery is rich in minerals, mainly iron with traces of other mineral salts. While most of the iron in jaggery comes through its processing in iron vessels, the other minerals come directly from the sugar cane juice, since the juice does not undergo refinement or bleaching of any kind.

Aids in Digestion: As jaggery has natural cleansing properties, it also helps get rid of digestion problems. If you eat a piece of jaggery every day with water or milk, your body will be free from all toxins.
