Dealing with Excessive Yawning
We all do it and we all know that it has something to do with tiredness. There is little research done to support the number of theories as to why we yawn.
First let’s look at the process of yawning. Yawning involves opening the mouth involuntarily while taking a long, deep breath of air. This is usually done as a result of drowsiness or weariness. Excessive yawning is yawning that happens more often than expected, even if drowsiness or weariness is present. It is mostly an involuntary process and is usually triggered by sleepiness or fatigue. It is a very natural response to being tired.
Causes of Yawning
The majority of disorders associated with yawning are those of the central nervous system, including epilepsy, encephalitis, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and progressive supranuclear palsy. Excessive yawning is also associated with opiate withdrawal and the consumption of a variety of drugs that affect neurotransmitters, such as drugs prescribed for Parkinson’s disease or depression. In some people, increased activity can cause their blood pressure and heart rate to fall. If the reaction is mild, these people may yawn, or feel apprehensive or restless. In more severe cases, a person can exhibit dizziness, nausea, palpitation, or even become unconscious.
Yawning excessively is when the act of yawning occurs repeatedly or in close succession. When you yawn, your mouth opens and you take in a deep, long breath. Sometimes this is accompanied by a sigh. Yawning may also be triggered by observing someone else yawning.
Yawning excessively may accompany other symptoms affecting the body including abdominal pain or cramping, balance problems, difficulty walking, falls, dizziness or vertigo, fatigue, headache, and sleep disturbances.
Yawning excessively may accompany symptoms related to an emotional or psychological disturbance including anxiety, changes in mood, personality or behavior, depression, irritability and mood changes, lack of energy, malaise or lethargy, and severe fatigue.
As yawning is a sure sign of sleepiness, the best remedy is to drink a glass of water. The person may be suffering from fatigue and replenishing the water supply of the body can alleviate lethargy and recharge the body systems.
With the lungs demanding more oxygen through yawning, it is recommended to take a walk outdoors to breathe in the fresh air. It can help increase the flow of oxygen into the brain and the whole body.
Avoid stress or situations that can be tiresome for one’s health. Try to get the ideal amount of sleep and learn to breathe properly to ensure the right supply of oxygen in the lungs.
Although yawning is an involuntary reaction done by a person who has his or her reasons for yawning, it is common knowledge that there are proper places to elicit that stifled yawn.
Try to hide a yawn whenever in public especially when there is a person speaking in front.
If there is a huge need to yawn, it is best to go to a secluded area and yawn.
If yawning is excessive, it is best to consult a doctor. Be it due to fatigue, stress, or some condition, a doctor would be well advised as to the condition that may be causing the excessive yawning.
