They say eyes are the windows to the soul. But then why sometimes they look puffy and tired? Puffy eyes may be due to various factors. The skin around the eyes is thin, weak, and very sensitive.

Common reason for puffy eyes can be either lack of sleep or weeping which goes off after some time. It is a common symptom of allergies, lack of sleep, stress, and poor diet. It can range from mild to severe. In mild cases it disappears after some time or after some treatment done at home. But if it is severe, the symptoms are accompanied by pain, blurry vision, or other such condition, then you must consult your optometrist for proper treatment.

Causes

Alcohol consumption, allergies, cigarette smoking, over/less sleep, consumption of excess salt, fluid retention due to change in weather, sleeping on your back, hormonal change; diseases such as hyperthyroidism, dermatitis, Grave’s disease, mononucleosis, or trichinosis.

Home Remedies

Here are some quick remedies to make your tired droopy eyes charming and full of life.

Splash Face with Cold Water

Sometimes, it only needs a splash of cold water on your eyes and face. Most of the times, the puffiness under eyes is due to faulty fluid circulation within your face. A splash with cold water constricts the blood vessels and starts the fluid circulation thus reducing swelling in no time. You can even put some ice in water to make it really cold. However, do not apply extremely cold water to the skin around your eyes for more than a couple of seconds.

Egg White

It is one of the best home remedies for under eye bags and puffy eyes. Simply whip up 2 egg whites until stiff and then apply them underneath the eyelids. You can use a soft cloth or brush to apply them on the loose skin under your eyes. This will help the skin become tighter and not like the puff pastry they are.

Cucumber

Cucumbers have astringent properties that will cause the blood vessels to constrict. Simply buy cucumbers from the grocery store, then put them in the refrigerator for some time. Cut them into round slices. Lie down on your back and close your eyes. Ensure you are relaxed enough because this will be very important. Place a slice on each eye and rest with them for about 10 minutes to cure the puffy eyes.

Potato Slice

Potato tubers have been tried in European medicine and are widely used to cure headaches, painful joints, and many other inflammatory conditions. Puffy eyes and dark eye circles can occur as a result of irritation. You can get rid of under eye bags using potato slices because they have anti-inflammatory agents.

Lemon Slice

Slice two pieces of lemon and place them on the eye bags. Ensure that you do not squeeze your eyes. Keep them relaxed, but careful not to open them. Keep the thin lemon slices over your eyes for about 10 to 20 minutes in order to treat under eye bags. Rinse off with cold water.

Vitamin E capsules are sold in drug stores. They contain oil enclosed in the capsule. This can be used as a topical home remedy for under eye bags. Use a pin to pierce the capsule, then dab a small amount of Vitamin E oil on your fingertip. Apply it topically on the eye bags.

Take two cotton balls and soak them in this salty warm water. Close your eyes and place these cotton balls over your eyes. Let them sit there till the time they get cool. Soak them again in the warm water and place on eyes. Repeat for at least 25-30 minutes.

Drink Water

When your body retains water, it can result in swelling under the eyes. So keep your body hydrated, drink lots of water. When your body gets deprived of water, it starts accumulating water as a defense. When you drink lots of water, it will automatically release water resulting in reduced puffiness.

Sleep Tight and Sleep Right

Depriving yourself of sleep will also give you eye bags. Sleep at least for 7-8 hours as per your body’s demand. Also watch for your sleeping position. Keep your head elevated when you sleep so that the fluid doesn’t build up under eyes due to gravity pull. Do not sleep on stomach, it is better to sleep on your back for the same reason. Sleeping on sides can also make one of your eyes puffy in the morning.

Importantly, if there is swelling or puffiness, you should not rub your eyes and go ahead and seek medical attention if your condition is severe.
